Family Time in Salzburger Land

Your family holiday will be an unforgettable experience at the salt. Nature is right at your doorstep, there are many excursion destinations just around the corner, and in between, there is plenty of time for each other. Here you will find everything you and your family need to leave everyday life behind and create unforgettable memories to take home with you.

From the salt, you can reach many family-friendly highlights in just a few minutes: the Hallein Salt Mines with their mysterious tunnels, the summer toboggan run on the Dürrnberg or the small Zinkenlifte ski area in winter – perfect for your first downhill runs in the snow. The old town of Hallein itself is also a great place to spend time, with walking paths along the water, playgrounds and charming alleys for a little break in between.

Salzwelten Hallein Salt Mines

Head deep into the mountain – take a ride on the mine train, make your way through mysterious tunnels and zip down a slide into the heart of the history of salt. An exciting adventure for young and old – underground, interactive and educational.

  • Opening hours: 9 am – 5 pm (in winter months: until 3 pm)
  • Year-round children’s tours every Sunday at 2:30 pm + additional dates during the summer holidays (July to September)
Dürrnberg Celtic Mountain

A mountain full of adventure, excitement and history. Right next to the salt mines, children and adults can discover how the Celts lived around 2,600 years ago. Where did they sleep? What did they eat? How did they mine salt? Where did their animals live?

Zinkenlifte & summer toboggan run

Take the chairlift up, zip back down at full speed: the summer toboggan run on the Zinkenkogel is a thrill ride with a view. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can simply enjoy the hiking trails and the views of the Salzach Valley.

Museum of the Celts Hallein – with interactive stations for children

What makes a real Celtic sword? How did families live over 2,000 years ago? At the Museum of the Celts, children discover history at their level – with age-appropriate interactive stations and exciting exhibits to marvel at, ask questions and learn.

Tips for family excursions 

Hellbrunn Zoo

Lions, llamas, lynxes and more – surrounded by pure nature! Salzburg’s Hellbrunn Zoo offers fantastic encounters with animals on its extensive grounds. Particularly popular are the feeding times, the adventure playground and the proximity to Hellbrunn Palace Park.

Fantasiana Amusement Park in Strasswalchen

Fun for the entire family. From roller coasters to fairy tale forests, raft rides to fun on the water: plenty of adventure awaits at Fantasiana – the perfect place for a day trip with children of all ages.

Grödig Adventure Farm

Pet the animals, feed goats, drive tractors. This family-friendly farm in Grödig near Salzburg amazes guests aged 3 to 12 with lots of hands-on activities, hay barn and picnic area. Also ideal for toddlers.

  • Animals on the farm: alpacas, miniature ponies, miniature goats, miniature sheep, chickens in all shapes and sizes, miniature cows, rabbits, guinea pigs, miniature pigs, budgies, cockatiels, peacocks, turkeys and guinea fowl.

Boat trips on Lake Königssee

The boat glides quietly across the emerald green water – until the sound of trumpets triggers the lake’s famous echo. On the way to St Bartholomä, the trip becomes a special nature experience that wows children and adults alike.

Liechtenstein Gorge in St Johann im Pongau

One of the longest and deepest gorges in the Alps impresses with thundering waterfalls, spectacular footbridges and pure nature. Surefootedness is required – but a real adventure for young and old alike is guaranteed.

Hohenwerfen Castle

Experience the age of knights! The impressive castle complex above the Salzach Valley delights visitors with a bird of prey flight show, a medieval exhibition and a large castle courtyard. Our tip: take a guided tour with sword and helmet for little damsels and squires.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

An excursion for little knights and big explorers. Salzburg’s most famous castle towers high above the old town – with time-worn walls, authentic princely chambers and a view that will take your breath away. Even the ride on the funicular railway is an experience in itself! And if you’re in the mood, you can take a leisurely stroll down the castle path afterwards – with lots of little discoveries to be made along the way.

Haus der Natur natural history museum in Salzburg

Research, marvel, experiment. The perfect destination for any weather: from dinosaurs to the human body to space stations – here you can learn, laugh and get hands-on. This is sure to be a highlight for curious little ones.

Hoppolino Indoor Playground

Even when it’s grey outside, it’s always colourful here! Climb, jump, slide and have some fun: the Hoppolino trampoline and indoor play park in Anif near Salzburg is the perfect destination for rainy days. Plenty of space to let off steam – for little bundles of energy and relaxed parents.
